The surgery involving the removal of a woman’s ovaries is called bilateral oophorectomy. As the ovaries are primarily responsible for managing the hormones that regulates a woman’s menstrual cycle, including the two basic hormones progesterone and estrogen, removing ovaries can cause certain complications. Surgical menopause is one of the first things that a woman would notice as her ovaries are removed.
The side effects of ovary removal surgery usually include all the signs and symptoms of menopause, but in a more severe manner. While normal menopause would result in mild to moderate symptoms because the ovaries still contribute to produce some amounts of hormones. But in case of a forced surgery for removing the ovaries due to some medical conditions, the consequences can be more critical than its natural course, which is obvious.
Most women who have been through an ovary removal surgery experience significant bodily changes, including sudden menopause, mood swings insomnia or sleeplessness, anxiety and fatigue, hot flashes, inability to get pregnant and night sweats. Removing the ovary can also have a serious effect on the sexuality of a woman; it decreases sex drive and makes a woman psychologically weak.
As ovaries are responsible for the balanced production of the two primary hormones, removing the ovary can create an overall imbalance in the body as well.
