Post Partum Depression can be treated by a number of ways. This includes the use of antidepressants, counseling and psychotherapy. For the women who have given birth to their babies and are breastfeeding them can opt for psychotherapy and psychosocial treatments, because they do not want the action of drug on their breast milk. Although there are some anti-depression drugs available which do not cause any side effect in the infants.
Antidepressants like Notriptyline, paroxetine(Paxil) and sertraline are some of anti depressants which do not cause any side effect in the infants and are considered best for breastfeeding women.
Other than the use of anti-depressants psychotherapy is also used for the treatment of post partum depression. The most effective treatment for the depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. Other than this, interpersonal therapy is also used in treatment of post partum depression. Apart from this the therapy which is beneficial for short term is psychodynamic therapy.
In various researches it has been found that psychosocial interventions are also helpful in the treatment of post partum depression. There is one other type of intervention known as non-directive counseling has also been tested in European countries and it has shown great effects.
