Can women in their post menopausal years have memory problems?

It is common observation that women after the age of 50 complain of forgetfulness or short term memory. They often experience a persistent phase of forgetfulness or confusion which chokes their lack of concentration as well. The reason for this condition can be attributed to loss of estrogen especially after menopause. Depletion of estrogen may occur due to progression of a physical or mental condition. These conditions may include surgery, pregnancy, depression, headache, and menopause. The extreme loss of the female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone during these circumstances lead to loss of memory or prevalence of forgetfulness. Women may find trouble in memorizing words, lack of concentration, fluctuations in the mood and behavior. These symptoms are however only short termed and can be speedily reversed by taking estrogen rich supplements.   According to experts, estrogen in constituted in several regions of the brain, especially in the hippocampus. This is region where most of the memories are stored. Moreover, the hormone is also responsible for the release of neurotransmitters which co-ordinate the mood, regulate the memory of the person. Therefore, a sudden or gradual loss of estrogen hampers the memory retain capacity of a person. The person often becomes susceptible to forgetting the recent memories while retaining decade old ones.
