Sexually transmitted diseases can be bacterial, viral or parasitic. Bacterial infections include vaginitis, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Vaginitis is caused by bacterial infection in the vaginal area. It is characterized by itching, burning sensation in the vagina, thick discharge. It can be treated by antibiotics. Chlamydia is a very common STD. Sometimes, there are no symptoms associated with the disease but if it is left untreated, it can cause permanent infertility. Vaginal or penile discharge, burning sensation while urinating, lower abdominal pain, irregular periods, swelling of testicles are also some familiar symptoms of the disease. Syphilis is characterized y sores in the genital area. Sometimes, it can spread all over the body. Patients with PID may experience lower abdominal pain, discharge, nausea, vomiting, and chills. Viral STDs include genital herpes, HPV/genital warts, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. Hepatitis infections are characterized by jaundice, flu like symptoms, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Herpes and HPV is identified by the presence of warts and sores in the genital area. HIV infections can sabotage the immune system causing symptoms like frequent illnesses, rapid weight loss, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes. Trichomonas infection is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It causes vaginal discharge, discomfort during intercourse. |
