Can genital herpes be categorized as an STD?

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by an infectious virus. As per the experts, the disease is mainly caused by the infestation of herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2. The attack of HSV-1 usually results into the formation of painful blisters around the sensitive genital areas.  This disease is easily transmitted from one person to another by the establishment of sexual contacts. In fact, any skin-to-skin contact with the infected person may lead to the spread of the spores of the infecting virus. Therefore, both intercourse and oral sex can trigger the spread of this disease. It is significant to note that the disease is so contagious that it can easily spread from one person to another without showing any significant signs of its outbreak. More than 90 per cent of the people fail to recognize the onset of this infection due to lack of any signs. Such people suffer from mild forms of the infection. However, even mild to moderate forms of genital herpes are also extremely contagious and may spread with a mere skin contact. It is believed that more than 45 million people are affected by this disease. The highest rate of this infection is observed among the lower or poor class of the society. This sect of the people have very few or negligible knowledge on the facets of safe sex.
