Sexual health of a man and hormones

Testosterone is the main hormone responsible for sexual health and well being in men. This hormone produced by the testes kicks into action as early as the 8th week of gestation. It is this hormone which controls proper development of penis and scrotum in the male fetus. During puberty, two more hormones come into play. These are the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and the luteinizing hormone (LH). While the luteinizing hormone increases the production of testosterone in the body, the follicle stimulating hormone helps in the production f sperm. The increased in testosterone levels during puberty results in a number of physical changes like deeper voice, growth of a mustache and beard, increase in bodily hair, improved sexual health, increase in muscle mass, more energy production. Testosterone plays an important role in maintaining sperm production and sexual health throughout adulthood. As men age, the levels of testosterone tend to decline. This results in several problems like loss of energy, fatigue, loss of libido, sexual dysfunction. Other hormones involved in male sexual health include epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. Epinephrine and norepinephrine are produced when a male is aroused. It increases heart rate and increases blood supply to the muscles, brain and penis. Dopamine also plays an important role in enhancing libido and helps maintain erections.
